Beer Review: Hop Karma Brown IPA

Beer Name: Hop Karma Brown IPA

Price: I got this in a Build your own 6-Pack at Whole Foods in Coral Gables, FL.

ABV: 6.00%

Style: American Brown Ale

Brewery: Terrapin Beer Co.

Color: This brew poured a opaque brown color with a thin, bubbly tan head. This was poured into a 16oz. pint glass.

Aroma: The smell was quite interesting. I judged the brew by the name and was expecting a strong hoppy smell, only to be surprised by a malty and light chocolate aroma. There was a hint of hops in there as well.

Flavor: In the taste is when the hops shine in. The flavor you get is earthy and citrus. Once you get past the hoppy flavor you start to get the malt and chocolate flavor. Very nice to those that like their brews to have multiple characteristics in taste to shock the taste buds.

Finish: The mouth feel was a light-medium bodied and carbonated. The aftertaste is made up of the hops and malt you get in the taste.

Comments: So Terrapin decided to concoct a Brown IPA that consisted of 5 varieties of hops and 7 different malts…they indeed got my attention. The little terrapin turtle always calls to me when I am in the stores so it was a must I picked this up. I don’t know why, every time, I see the word IPA, I immediately think strong in hops. That is not always the case and this was a good example of that. In this Brown ale you get a nice malty, chocolaty smell. The taste however was a hoppy citrus flavor, very enjoyable. It’s medium all around. Medium alcohol, medium bodied and medium carbonated. You know what that meant? Very easy to drink. I really am impressed by all craft breweries for the fact that each one has a specific character in their brews and how they handle their business, Terrapin is a great example of that. Cheers.
